The error “Microsoft Edge can’t read and write to its data directory” generally suggests a problem with file permissions, preventing Edge from accessing its data directory. However, this isn’t always the cause. Other potential contributors to this issue include problems with the WebView2 Runtime or corruption within Edge’s files. These factors can disrupt normal functionality and lead to the error message.

1. Run Microsoft Edge as an Administrator

One of the simplest solutions to this issue is running Microsoft Edge as an administrator. However, this will only work if you encounter an error while using Microsoft Edge to access a website. If you’re experiencing an issue with a third-party application unrelated to Edge, this method may not resolve the problem, and you should consider trying other solutions.

  1. Simply right-click on Microsoft Edge and select Run as administrator. If the issue is resolved, configure Microsoft Edge to always run as an administrator.
  2. To do that, right-click Microsoft Edge and go to Properties.
  3. Then, go to Compatibility and check Run this program as administrator.
  4. Once done, click Apply and then OK to save the settings.

2. Repair Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime

Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is a runtime environment used by many third-party applications to render web content, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, within their native desktop applications using the Microsoft Edge browser’s rendering engine.

Several third-party applications rely on Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime for web-based content. Therefore, any issues with the WebView2 Runtime could prevent these applications from accessing necessary resources, potentially resulting in the error message “Microsoft Edge can’t read and write to its data directory.” Therefore, in this step, we will try repairing the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, which will restore the corrupted files that may be causing the issue.

  1. Right-click the Start Menu or Windows icon and select Run to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and click OK to open Programs and Features in the Control Panel.
  3. Here, double-click Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime and click Repair.
  4. Wait for the process to complete. Once done, check if this resolved the error.

3. Check Folder Permissions

To resolve the error message, it is important to ensure that the application has the necessary permissions to access the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. In this case, we will configure the permissions for Microsoft Edge. If you’re experiencing this issue with another application, make sure it also has the appropriate read and write permissions.

Additionally, you need to check the permissions for the folder where WebView2 stores data for embedded web components used by many applications. By ensuring that the user account has proper permissions, you can prevent the error message from occurring.

  1. Press the Win + R keys simultaneously to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type appdata in the input box and click OK.
  3. Navigate to Local > Microsoft.
  4. Here, right-click Edge and select Properties.
  5. Go to Security and make sure that all user accounts have Full Control over the folder. If you see any missing permissions, take full control of the folder by following the steps described in the linked article.
  6. Once done, navigate to the AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge directory, right-click the User Data folder, and go to Properties.
  7. Then, go to Security from the top and make sure you have full control over the folder. If you see any missing permissions for the folder, configure the folder permissions by following the steps in the linked article.

If the error continues to appear, contact Microsoft Support, particularly if you’re experiencing this issue with a Microsoft-developed application.

If Microsoft Edge is consuming a significant amount of CPU resources, it is typically because the browser or its specific features are using a lot of processing power. This usually happens when Edge is running multiple tasks, which can significantly impact CPU performance.

Mostly, this issue occurs when unnecessary features, such as Startup Boost, are enabled, or when the browser is running with extensions active in the background. Other potential causes can include having too many active extensions, corrupted browser cache data, or even malware that may be affecting the browser.

Since we’ve discussed the causes, let’s have a look at the solutions to this issue.

1. Configure Microsoft Edge Settings

This solution is intended for users experiencing high CPU usage even when Microsoft Edge is not in use. If you encounter this issue while actively using Microsoft Edge, consider trying other methods.

Certain settings can be either helpful or irrelevant, depending on the user and system specifications. If your system has low specifications, you may need to adjust a few settings to reduce CPU and memory consumption. However, even if you have high system specifications, it is still recommended to configure these settings to determine if they are causing the issue.

For example, turning off features such as “Startup Boost” and “Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed” can significantly reduce CPU consumption. Startup Boost allows Microsoft Edge to run in the background for faster startups. After configuring these settings, you should notice an improvement in CPU usage.

  1. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  2. Select System and Performance from the left sidebar.
  3. Disable the following settings: Startup Boost and Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.
  4. Once done, verify if this resolves the issue. If not, proceed with the following methods.

2. Update the Browser and Windows

Outdated versions of Windows and browsers often contain bugs that could cause Microsoft Edge to consume excessive amounts of CPU.

Newer versions of the browser and Windows include bug fixes, performance optimizations, and better resource management. By updating both, you ensure compatibility and improvements in stability, which should help reduce CPU consumption.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge, click the three dots in the top-right corner, and select Settings.
  2. Select About Microsoft Edge from the left sidebar.
  3. If the About Page shows Microsoft Edge is up to date, then no action is needed. If an update is available, simply click Download and Install to proceed.
  4. For Windows Updates, click the Start Menu and type Check for updates.
  5. Press Enter to open the Windows Update settings.
  6. Click Check for updates. If updates are found, click Download and Install.
  7. Once done, see if this resolves the issue.

3. Reset the Browser

Resetting the browser will disable the extensions and reset the settings to default. Having too many extensions active can increase CPU and memory consumption. Therefore, it’s advisable to reset Microsoft Edge’s settings to default to determine if this resolves the issue.

  1. In the browser, select Settings by clicking the three dots in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Reset Settings from the left and click Restore settings to their default values.
  3. Click Reset to confirm the action.
  4. Once done, check if Microsoft Edge is still consuming excessive CPU resources.

4. Scan for Malware

Malware or malicious files can exploit system resources, leading to excessive CPU consumption. Running a full system scan ensures that malware or any malicious files that might be affecting the browser’s performance are removed.

  1. Open Settings by pressing the Win + I keys.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security from the left, then click Windows Security.
  3. Click Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & Threat Protection. Click Scan options and then select Full Scan.
  5. Click Scan Now to proceed.
  6. Once completed, check if the high CPU consumption issue is resolved.

5. Enable Efficiency Mode

Efficiency Mode helps reduce high CPU consumption by managing background activities in the browser, such as background tab processes, video playback, and animations, more efficiently.

When this feature is enabled, it prioritizes tasks, freeing up system resources and reducing CPU usage, particularly during multitasking. To enable Efficiency Mode, follow these steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and click the three dots in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Settings from the options.
  3. Go to System & Performance from the left sidebar.
  4. Enable Efficiency Mode under Optimize Performance.
  5. Once done, check if this resolves the issue.

Lastly, if the problem persists, consider switching to an alternative browser. We have a complete guide on the best browsers for 2024, where you can select the one that best suits your needs.

The error “Your client has issued a malformed or illegal request. That’s all we know.” indicates that your request cannot be processed, usually due to incorrect syntax or illegal formatting. Mostly, this issue is encountered due to problematic cookies, cache data, malformed URLs, incorrect HTTP request formatting, or DNS issues.

Additionally, the service you are trying to access may not be available in your region, preventing the request from reaching the server to get a response. In this case, you can try using a VPN to change the region to access that service by bypassing the regional restriction. However, if the service is available without regional restrictions, ensure there are no issues on the server side or from the service provider.

1. Clear Browser Cookies and Cache

Clearing the browser cache and cookies will remove the stored data saved by the website to speed up the loading process. If this data becomes corrupted, it can cause conflicts or errors. This ensures the browser loads fresh website content and saves updated information in the cache files to eliminate corruption.

  1. On your browser, click the three dots and select Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security from the left pane and select Delete Browsing Data.
  3. Change the Time Range from the Last Hour to All Time.
  4. Ensure “Cookies and other site data” and “Cached images and files” are selected, then click Delete Data.
  5. Once done, verify if the error is appearing by visiting the website displaying the error.

2. Reset Browser Settings

Resetting the browser restores the default settings and reverts any changes or customization that might be causing the issue. This eliminates the chances of configuration conflicts or problematic extensions. Therefore, make sure to reset the browser settings to see whether the issue is fixed.

  1. To do so, click the three dots and select Settings.
  2. Select Reset Settings from the left sidebar and click Reset Settings to their default state.
  3. Finally, click Reset Settings to confirm the action.
  4. Once done, try accessing the service or website showing the error message.

3. Use Incognito Mode

If the problem persists, try accessing the website or service in incognito mode. This prevents the browser from using extensions, cookies, and cached data, which could cause conflicts and result in error messages. Using Incognito Mode minimizes the chances of encountering errors by ensuring a clean and fresh session. If it works, consider disabling extensions or checking browser settings to isolate the issue.

Simply click the three dots at the top right in your browser and select New Incognito Window to activate incognito mode.

4. Reinstall the Browser

Finally, if the issue still persists, consider reinstalling the browser to replace corrupted files and reset misconfigured settings to default, which may be causing the issue. This will ensure a clean and up-to-date installation that should resolve the error message.

  1. Right-click the Start Menu and select Settings (or navigate to the Control Panel).
  2. Go to Apps and find the browser in the list.
  3. Select the browser and click Uninstall.
  4. Once it is uninstalled, reinstall the browser from the official website.
  5. Once done, verify if the error is resolved or not.

If reinstalling the browser fails to resolve the error, try using a VPN to check if there’s a restriction preventing access to the service, or switch to a different browser to see if the issue is specific to the current browser.

The Arc browser may refuse to launch for several reasons. I personally faced this issue after installing it for the very first time in Windows 11. Various factors could stop the Arc browser from launching. This issue occurs mainly due to problems with application data. However, you may also face this issue if there are multiple instances of Arc already running in the background.

Before we proceed to the methods, it is advisable to restart your computer. This will restart all the services and clear out the data from memory, which can eliminate bugs that might be preventing you from launching the Arc browser.

1. Reset or Repair Arc

This method has worked for me, and it might be the best solution to try first. Resetting Arc will clear the application data, which includes your authentication cookies and frequently accessed data. Additionally, if you repair the Arc browser, it will attempt to fix the files that might be corrupted, which could be causing this issue.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Arc.
  2. Right-click the Arc Application and select App Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and click Repair.
  4. Once done, try launching the Arc app. If it still doesn’t launch, then click Reset, and the issue should be gone.

2. Close Arc from the Task Manager

You might have multiple instances of the Arc browser running in the background. If that’s the case, you might not be able to launch the Arc browser until you close all the instances from the Task Manager.

  1. Right-click the Taskbar and select Task Manager.
  2. Once it is launched, right-click each Arc instance one by one and select End task.
  3. Once done, launch the Arc browser to see if this worked.

3. Run Arc as an Administrator

Running Arc as an administrator will grant all the necessary permissions it requires to run properly. Sometimes, applications refuse to launch due to insufficient permissions to access DLL and other redistributions. It might be worth trying if the issue persists.

  1. Right-click the Arc app and select Run as administrator.
  2. If Arc launches, then configure it to always run as administrator.
  3. Right-click the Arc Browser and select Properties.

4. Reinstall Arc Browser

Lastly, if none of the solutions work, reinstalling the Arc browser might be the final solution you can try. This will fix the problem if corrupted files are causing the issue.

  1. Click the Start Menu, type Arc, and right-click on it.
  2. Then, select Uninstall. Click Uninstall again to confirm.
  3. Once done, download and install the Arc browser.
  4. Then, check if the issue is resolved or persists.

If reinstalling the app also fails to launch the Arc browser, report this issue to Arc browser support. They will better assist you by analyzing your situation closely.

There are times when the application data becomes corrupted, leading to various issues, especially with Arc. Therefore, you should try repairing or resetting the Arc browser to resolve this problem.

  1. Press Win and type Arc.
  2. Right-click on it and select App Settings.
  3. Here, scroll down to the bottom.
  4. First, click the Repair option and wait for it to be completed.
  5. Once done, if the issue persists, try resetting the Arc app.

3. Close Unnecessary Background Applications

Slow performance often occurs when many applications are running simultaneously in the background, using a significant amount of RAM (memory), which results in performance loss. Ensure that unnecessary background applications are not running while browsing on the Arc browser.

4. Update the Arc Browser

Outdated applications can lead to performance issues. Ensure you are running the latest version of the Arc browser.

  1. Open the Arc App, click the Arc icon from the top, and select Check for updates.
  2. If updates are found, click Install & Restart.
  3. Once done, check if the problem is resolved.

Finally, if none of the solutions have resolved the issue, consider reinstalling the Arc browser. This can help if there are corrupted application files causing the problem. Additionally, you can contact the official support team of Arc Browser for further assistance regarding this issue.

Flashing issues in the Arc browser often occur while watching YouTube videos or performing other tasks on the browser. When this happens, a random Arc window pops up for a second and disappears before you can figure out what’s going on.

This type of issue is not easy to troubleshoot, as it does not give us any information to figure out the root cause. However, according to reports from affected users, this issue could be caused by unnecessary extensions. While it could be the leading cause, it might not be the only one, as other factors, such as corrupted app or cache data, can contribute to triggering this issue.

1. Remove Extensions

One of the best solutions is to remove the extensions and then add them one by one until you find the one causing the issue. Using this approach, you will be able to determine which extension is causing the problem.

  1. Click the Arc icon at the top left of the browser.
  2. Hover over Extensions from the list of options and click Manage Extensions. Here, you will see all the extensions installed in your browser. Click Remove one by one to remove all the extensions.
  3. Once done, check if the issue is resolved. If it is, then install the extensions one by one until you encounter the issue again.

2. Create a New Space

Just like in Chrome, we create different profiles to keep our bookmarks, cookies, and history separate from other users. In Arc Browser, we can create a new space to keep our data separate. Creating a new space can fix a flashing issue. You can try this before proceeding to any other method.

  1. Open the Arc Browser, click the Plus icon at the bottom left, and click New Space.
  2. Give a name to your space and click the Default icon.
  3. Now select the New Profile and give a name to your profile.
  4. Once done, click Create Profile.
  5. Now verify if the same issue persists or is fixed.

3. Reset or Repair the Arc Browser

Resetting the Arc browser will remove application data, such as authentication cookies and cache data. Sometimes, the application data becomes corrupted, causing the application to behave unexpectedly. That is where the resetting and repairing application options come into play.

Repairing the application does not necessarily delete application data, but it will attempt to fix the application files that might be causing the issue.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Arc.
  2. Right-click the Arc app and select App Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and click the Repair option. If the problem persists, try resetting the Arc app.
  4. Once done, the issue should be gone.

If the problem is not resolved, you should reinstall the Arc browser, as there might be some corrupted files in the application directory causing the issue. If this also fails, reach out to the support team of Arc Browser to get further assistance with this issue.

The post How to Turn Off Google’s AI Overviews in Google Search? appeared first on Appuals.

]]>
Google’s AI overview, also known as SGE (Search Generative Experience), has been frustrating users since its launch due to the inaccuracy of the answers to users’ queries. In a recent instance, a user searched for a solution to get rid of kidney stones, but surprisingly, Google AI advised him to drink a couple of gallons of his own urine.

This isn’t the only case; in another instance, a user claimed that Google AI advised him to use glue in response to a query about cheese not sticking to pizza.

If you have enabled Google’s AI overviews, unfortunately, you cannot disable it directly, even if you don’t like it. However, there are some indirect ways to turn off AI overviews and go straight to the search results. This article will discuss ways to avoid Google’s AI overviews.

So if it Cannot Be Disabled, How to Avoid it or Hide it?

To avoid Google’s AI overview, you can either send your search query directly to the web search or use an extension to remove Google’s AI overviews.

Using the extension will remove the HTML by making changes in the CSS, such as finding the Google AI overview block and changing its display to none, which will make the Google AI overviews disappear from the Google search result page. This method will work as long as Google does not change any code on the search results page.

However, since Google’s search results page changes periodically, any small change by Google will break the functionality of the extensions, stopping them from working. If the developers stay up-to-date with these changes, it will be easier to avoid Google’s AI overviews without making any changes to the browser. Additionally, we have provided long-term reliable methods, so you don’t need to worry if the extension method stops working.

1. Use Extension to Block AI Overviews

The automatic way to remove AI overviews is to use an extension that adds CSS code to the HTML block of the AI overview using JavaScript to make it disappear. Many online extensions allow users to disable AI overviews. You can use any of these extensions. We recommend you use Hide Google AI Overview or Bye Bye, Google AI to remove AI overviews.

  1. Click the three dots at the top right and hover over Extensions.
  2. Click Chrome Web Store and search for Bye Bye, Google AI. Now, add it to your browser.
  3. Once done, you should not see any Google AI overviews when searching on Google.
  4. Additionally, if you hit W + Spacebar after enabling the Bye Bye, Google AI extension and then enter your query, it will send it straight to the web tab, which does not include AI overviews.

2. Search from Chrome’s Address Bar

If the extension is not working, you can use a reliable long-term method by searching the query from the web address bar. If you search most of your queries from the web address bar, you will need to make a simple change to avoid AI overviews. This change will direct you straight to the web tab on Google, which does not include AI overviews.

  1. Click the Three Dots at the top and select Settings.
  2. Go to Search Engine from the left sidebar. Here, click Manage Search Engines and Site Search.
  3. Under Site Search, click Add.
  4. Fill out the following data in the fields described below.

How to Turn Off Google’s AI Overviews on Android/iOS?

You cannot add extensions to a mobile device like you can with Google Chrome or any other browser on a PC. You cannot even add a custom search engine to popular browsers like Google Chrome for Android or Safari for iOS. However, the Firefox browser on Android and iOS allows us to add a custom search engine that we can use to send our queries straight to the web tab.

  1. Install Firefox from the PlayStore or AppStore.
  2. Click the three dots and select Settings.
  3. Tap Search under General Settings, then tap Default Search Engine.
  4. Tap Add Search Engine here, and fill out the data in the fields mentioned below.
    Name: Google Web

    String URL: google.com/search?udm=14&q=%s

  5. Once done, click Save and then select the search engine that you just created.
  6. Now, when you search on the web address bar, it will send you directly to the Google web address.

When users attempt to access their Dropbox accounts and run into Error 500, this usually indicates there’s a problem on Dropbox’s servers processing the request. This error is often encountered when users attempt operations like signing in or registering.

Error 500 can have several causes, including server overloads, disruption due to maintenance, wrong login details, or even a damaged browser and application cache. A weak internet connection could also bring about this error, so it’s recommended to check your network connection as an initial step.

Dropbox usually responds swiftly to these issues, often alerting users about ongoing server status and maintenance updates through their official status page and community forums.

1. Check Dropbox Server Status

We always recommend starting your troubleshooting by confirming the server status. This step is important because, if the server is down or in the middle of maintenance, any attempts to fix the issue would be useless. Thus, please ensure you check the server status at status.dropbox.com. Only continue with the following methods if it is running.

Also, it’s essential to ensure that the login details you are using are not incorrect. If they are wrong, you’re likely to encounter this issue. So, before proceeding with the other methods, ensure there are no typos in your password.

2. Clean up Website and Application Cache

There might be a cache issue with your browser or application, resulting in this error message. A cache is data that the application or browser saves when you log in, register, or visit the application or website for the first time.

Cache data includes images, webpage content, user data, and cookies. As the error occurs mostly when trying to log in, the problem may be with the cookies.

Cookies are basically a key that gives you access to your account and data associated with it. The program or website generates it when you register or log in. Therefore, in this method, you will be erasing the cache data along with the cookies.

2.1 Browsers

  1. The next steps might vary, depending on your browser.
  2. Click the three dots and select Settings from the list of options.
  3. Once you are in the settings, look for the Privacy & Security option and go to Site Settings.
  4. Click View permissions and data stored across sites.
  5. Now, you can look for dropbox.com in the list of websites.
  6. Click the Delete icon and then click Delete to confirm.
  7. After that, try logging in to the website again.

2.2 Windows

  1. Press the Win + R keys together to open the Run utility.
  2. Now, type %localappdata% and hit Enter to go to the folder.
  3. Find and erase the Dropbox folder.
  4. When done, relaunch the Dropbox application and check if the error continues.

3. Try a Different Browser

We highly suggest logging in to a different browser. This will help you determine if the error is associated with the server or not. There are many browsers available, and to select a reliable one, refer to our list of The 7 Best Web Browsers For Every Kind of User.

If the issue remains, you might want to reinstall Dropbox as your last option. If the problem still continues after reinstalling Dropbox, we suggest letting Dropbox know about the issue by reaching out to them on their official website.

The message “Your browser is a bit unusual” is frequently prompted when adblockers or anti-virus software stop GoDaddy from opening in the browser. While this is a primary cause, it isn’t the only one.

Even without active adblocker, antivirus software, or VPN on your computer, this problem might still come up. This means that the issue could originate from GoDaddy’s side. But before reaching out to GoDaddy, it is important to check that everything on our end is working properly.

Now that we are aware of the causes, we can discuss the solutions that have helped users resolve this issue.

1. Clear Cache and Cookie Data

Sometimes, websites may not behave as expected. This often occurs due to a corrupt cache stored in the browser. When you visit a website for the first time, it stores data such as images, user data, cookies, etc., in the cache.

This allows the website to display data without needing to make requests from the server, improving load time and user experience significantly.

The cache data getting corrupted is a common issue. Therefore, we will start by clearing the cache data from the browser to potentially fix this error.

  1. Click the three dots in the corner and select Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security from the left side menu and click Site Settings.
  3. Click on View Permissions and data stored across sites.
  4. Search for godaddy.com in the listed websites.
  5. Click on the Delete icon and then hit Delete to confirm.
  6. Finally, visit GoDaddy and log into your account to check if the error is still there.

2. Turn off the Anti-virus Program

As mentioned earlier, anti-virus programs interfering can also be a major cause of this problem. Many times, anti-virus software will alert you that a website you’re attempting to visit isn’t safe, making it possible for malware to infect your system. To check if this is the issue, turn off your antivirus software temporarily.

  1. Open the system or notification area from the bottom right corner.
  2. Right-click on the anti-virus software and hover over Manage, Control, or a similar option.
  3. Select either Disable for 10 minutes or Disable Permanently.
  4. After that, go to the GoDaddy website and check if the error is still present.

3. Disable and Remove Extensions

If you have any adblocker extensions running, they could also be the main reason for this problem. Moreover, disabling any other unnecessary extensions in your browser could help.

  1. Click on the three dots, hover over Extensions, and select Manage Extensions.
  2. You will see all the extensions installed in your browser here. Begin by disabling or removing the ad blocker and then any other extensions you don’t need.
  3. After completing this step, confirm if the error has been fixed.

4. Disable VPNs

Much like anti-viruses, VPNs often have web protection and file protection options that protect your device from malware. If you have a VPN with these features, that could be the reason for this issue.

Moreover, VPNs can slow down internet speeds and certain websites don’t allow users to use VPNs. So, if you use a VPN, it’s recommended to disable it.

5. Enable Javascript Permission on GoDaddy

Javascript is essential for websites as it lets them display features like video games, dialogs, or web forms. So, if it’s not enabled in your browser, that could be the reason you’re facing this issue.

  1. In your browser, click the three dots and select Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security and click Site Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the Content section and select Javascript.
  4. Make sure that the option Sites can use Javascript is enabled.
  5. Once done, check if the problem is still present.

6. Try a Different Web Browser

If you’ve followed all the above steps but are still experiencing the same issue, consider trying GoDaddy on a different browser. This will help you determine if the problem is with your browser. There are many alternatives to use for GoDaddy. Please refer to this article to select the best one.

If the problem isn’t resolved even after switching to a different browser, you might want to reach out to GoDaddy support for help.
